Farewell to "The Explorers Club"!

Farewell to "The Explorers Club" and thank you to all of our amazing audiences that came and laughed from London all the way to Phahatlabong! This truly was a remarkable production and hearing our audiences laugh was especially satisfying.

It’s Give to the MACT Time!

It's time for MACT's annual fundraising drive, "Give to the MACT".  The first $760 in donations will be matched by funds provided by current and former MACT Board Members.  This campaign ends Thursday, November 21st.  After that any unused matching dollars go away.

This year, MACT's Board has designated the funds raised by our Give to the MACT campaign to help offset some of the costs associated with bringing a show to MACT*Fest '25.

It costs theatres a considerable amount of money to participate in a festival.  There are the normal costs, like royalties, scripts, sets, costumes and props, associated with putting on a show.  But for festivals, there are additional costs like registrations fees, travel costs, hotels and meals.  Gifts from people like you, along with the matching dollars, will help cover some of the costs of presenting a show at MACT*Fest '25.

Remember, donations made between now and November 21st (up to the first $760) will be matched, so your gift will have double the impact for MACT*Fest presenting theatres.

Please consider making a donation to Give to the MACT now, before the matching dollars expire!

For our winter production and our 2025 AACT Entry we will be reviving “Finishing School” by Elaine Liner. This comedy about life’s second act finds older gents Al and Wizzer meeting on a park bench every morning to read and mock newspaper obits. Their daily rituals—shooting the bull about sports, women loved and lost and the many annoyances of aging—are suddenly shaken up by the appearance of a friendly young woman and her flirty mom. Wizzer pep-talks lonely widower Al to convince him to break out of his self-imposed “quantum of solace” and maybe find love again, while also dealing with his own fear of ending up in the memory care unit at their assisted living facility. Punctuated with true-to-life moments familiar to anyone with an aging parent or spouse, the play takes an upbeat attitude toward life after 60, 70 and beyond. Performances will be in February. Linda Metcalf will direct. FINISHING SCHOOL is presented through special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois

A comedy by William Shakespeare thought to have been written in 1598 and 1599. The primary plot of Much Ado About Nothing turns on the courtship and scandal involving young Hero and her suitor, Claudio, but the witty war of words between Claudio's friend Benedick and Hero's cousin Beatrice often takes center stage. Set in Messina, the play begins as Don Pedro's army returns after a victory.

Summer Youth Theatre Camp is this Month!

In partnership with The FungusAmongus Players of Dassel-Cokato, Community Education will be holding a Summer Youth Theatre Camp July 22 - 26. Besides covering theatre basics (like stage movement, blocking annotation and scoring a script) students will explore physicality and character expression, scene creation and interaction, improving dialogue and using body language as well as narrative structures and story arcs. Then campers will take the tools they learned all week in rehearsals to present a FREE final showcase performance for friends, family and fellow campers that they have created, written, and developed throughout the camp. Announcing Summer Youth Theatre Camp

The FungusAmongus Players in partnership with Dassel-Cokato Community Education will be offering a Summer Youth Theatre Camp for Grades 1 - 8 July 22 - 28 at the Dassel-Cokato Performing Arts Center.

Amanda Byrne (Imberg) & Kay Wilson will be leading this camp. Registration will be announced in the summer Community Ed. brochure and FungusAmongus will also link to it on our social media channels.

Through games and activities, these young actors will explore ways to express their creativity and spontaneity as well as build their confidence. Besides covering theatre basics (like stage movement, blocking annotation and scoring a script) students will explore physicality and character expression, scene creation and interaction, improving dialogue and using body language as well as narrative structures and story arcs. Then campers will take the tools they learned all week in rehearsals to present a FREE final showcase performance for friends, family and fellow campers to celebrate their achievements.

A group of the usual British murder-mystery types gather for a weekend retreat at the sumptuous country estate of the esteemed Lady Somerset. There's the major who served in India; the inebriated, fading actor; the innocent ingénue; the exotic lady in red; the mysterious Chinese gentleman; the rich dowager aunt and her faithful maid and worthless nephew. Suddenly, one of them dies of poison! Well, of course. Oh, what fun! But wait . Her Ladyship refuses to summon the police! She says she won't go through all this, again. All what, again? And why were they all invited here in the first place? Is this actually just another formulaic, all-too-predictable mystery story? Or is it something diabolically: different? Agatha Christie meets Pirandello, as characters rebel against their author. It's bloody murder.

Future Fungus News - August 2023

Farewell to "The Secret Garden"

We would like to thank everyone who came to see The Secret Garden. We’re also grateful for everyone on stage and behind the scenes who helped bring it to life!

"Come to the garden..."

2023 - 2024 Season Announcement!

With The Secret Garden closing out our 2022-2023 season, it’s finally time to announce our 2023-2024 season of shows!

  • October 2023: Bloody Murder by Ed Sala

  • December 2023: Nuncrackers by Dan Goggin

  • Winter 2024: The Crucible by Arthur Miller

  • Summer 2024: Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

Auditions for "Bloody Murder"

Open auditions for Bloody Murder by Ed Sala, directed by Tom Nelson, will be held at the Dassel History Center on Saturday August 19, at 10 AM and Tuesday August 22, at 7 PM.

Auditions will be done with cold readings from the script.

This mystery/comedy may be performed with 6, 8, or 12 actors. Each version requires an equal number of women and men. In the six and eight actor versions, several actors play more than one role. The most prominent characters are:

1) Lady Somerset - In her 70’s. A woman of great wealth and social standing.

2) Jane - In her 60’s. Lady Somerset’s maid and head of staff.

3) Emma Reese - Late 20s. The far-too-innocent ingenue.

4) The Countess - Late 30s, quite strikingly well preserved. The mystery woman.

5) The Major - Late 60s. Served with the military in India and constantly reminds everyone of it.

6) Devon Tremaine - Late 40s to early 50s. Formerly great tragic actor, now decking because of his fondness for single-malt Scotch.

7) Charles - Late 30s to early 40s. Her Ladyship’s worthless nephew.

8) Chief Inspector Phelps - Forties or 50s. The dim-witted policeman.

They are all stereotypes and meant to be so. The director would prefer to cast as many folks as possible for this production (maximum of 12).

Performance dates are October 13-15 and 20-22.

Please feel free to message our Facebook page with any questions.

It premiered on Broadway in 1991 and ran for 709 performances. The story is set in the early years of the 20th century, when Mary Lennox, an English girl born and raised in the British Raj, is orphaned by a cholera outbreak when she is 10 years old. She is sent away from India to the moors of Yorkshire, England, to live in the manor of a brooding uncle she has never met. There, her personality blossoms among the other residents of the manor as they bring new life to a long-neglected garden.

FungusAmongus Players 2017-2018 Season to be Announced on June 25!

Ever since the Village Players formed a few decades ago, community theatre has been a vibrant element of the Dassel-Cokato culture. Whether enjoying the nostalgic feel of an elementary school stage, the unique, intimate spaces of the Dassel History Center & Ergot Museum, or the more roomy expanse of the Performing Arts Center - thousands of people have been drawn into new...and sometimes familiar...worlds to explore.

Several years later, a new chapter begins as the FungusAmongus Players of Dassel-Cokato (FA) announce its first ever full season! In years past, the company has focused on one winter show which, every two years, was used in the American Association of Community Theatres (AACT) festival cycle. We want to give area talent more opportunities to participate, and offer our delightful audience more shows to enjoy.

We've been reading scripts, talking, debating, reading...reading...talking. You get the idea. And now we're ready to lay it all out on the table!

Want to know what shows will be in the FungusAmongus Players 2017-2018 Season? The announcement will take place at the June 25 at the 2:00pm final performance and fundraising event for "The Voice of the Prairie" at the Performance Arts Center. Come send your theatre company off to the National AACTFest and be among the first to get the scoop on our inaugural full season - and start thinking about how you might want to get involved (audition, help with set, volunteer support, etc.)!

See you there!
